Short Regains Commonwealth Title

Nigel Short of England won the Commonwealth Chess Championship after scoring a final round victory over Arun Prasad of Bharat Petroleum, Salem to regain his title on 9.5/11 at Nagpur on October 6. Visibly upset after the penultimate round to hear that the final round will be played at 9 a.m. and not 10 a.m., Short needed a win for the title with the black pieces and he did what was required of him. Starting as the top seed, Short slipped to 3.5/5 after losing to Rahul Sangma but scored wins in the last six rounds to win the title he last won in 2006 at Mumbai. Oshadi Kottahachchy won a Medal in World Youth

Sri Lankan chess player Oshadi Kottahachchy (Royal College) won a Bronze Medal from World Youth Under 16 Chess Olympiad – 2008 held at Mersin, Turkey. He played 10 games and collected 7.5 points in 2nd board. There were 38 players in his category which he managed to won the Bronze Medal. Oshadi’s performance is creditable to Sri Lanka. FIDE Master S.Nitin won 8th Adyar Times FIDE Rated Open Chess Championship

The above chess tournament organized by Tamil Nadu State Chess Association held in Bapalal Bhavan, Valmikinagar, Thiruvanmiyur, Chennai from 29th July to 3rd August 2008. Adyar Times is sponsored this event for the 8th consecutive time. There were 186 players participated including 88 Fide Rated players, one International Master and two Fide Masters. There were eight players from Sri Lanka participated by representing the Anatoly Karpov Chess Club and Lanka Chess Foundation. More
