8th Adyar Times FIDE Rated Open Chess Tournament

The above chess tournament organized by Tamil Nadu State Chess Association held in Bapalal Bhavan, Valmikinagar, Thiruvanmiyur, Chennai from 29th July to 3rd August 2008.

Adyar Times is sponsored this event for the 8th consecutive time. There were 186 players participated including 88 Fide Rated players, one International Master and two Fide Masters. There were eight players from Sri Lanka participated by representing the Anatoly Karpov Chess Club and Lanka Chess Foundation.

After the 10th round, Fide Master S. Nitin of Sharadha Bal Bhayen, Salem, India who is the member of Gold winning Indian Youth Team in the Youth Olympiad in Singapore, 2007 won the championship by collecting 9 points.

The champion received the Adyar Times Trophy with cash award Indian rupees 25000/= from the Chief Guest Lion P.N. Bhavani Shankar, President, Lions Club of South Madras. Mr. A.D. Ranjan, Publisher of Adyar Times Presides the function.  Gold Medalist of the 30th  Chess Olympiad in 1992, Mrs. Suneetha Wijesuriya, President of Anatoly Karpov Chess Club of the Russian Centre in Colombo, Sri Lanka graced the ceremony as the Guest of honour.
