Athula Wins the MORA Kings International Rating Chess Championship 2009

Top seed, the National Chess Champion of Sri Lanka, Athula Russell (Nf3 Chess Club), won the 2nd MORA Kings International Chess Championship scoring 8 points out of possible 9 games. Athula who was unbeaten and stayed on the top table for all 9 games played. Athula received his cash award of Rs. 30,000 with the Gold Medal and the 2nd MORA Kings Trophy from the Chief Guest, Mr. Rajesh Joshi, the president of the Nepal Chess Association. He also received a special cash award of 100$ from the Nepal Chess Federation with their best compliments.

The 2nd MORA Kings International Chess tournament was organized by the University of Moratuwa for the 2nd successive year with a total cash prizes of Rs 212,000/=. The biggest number of participation, a total of 209 participants in a event of this nature was attracted representing India, Nepal and Sri Lanka..The event was inaugurated by prof. Malik Ranasinghe, the Vice Chancellor of the University with Mr. Mahanama, the Dean of the Architecture faculty on 27th of August 2009. The event was held at the basement of the University Library from 27th August to 1st September 2009.

RS Kalugampitiya also tied with Athula scoring 8 points but had to satisfied with the silver medal according to the tie breaker. He also recieved Rs. 30,000/- as a cash award. Young Lahiru Hapuarachchi shined with the bronze medal scoring 7 1/2 points. Shyam Srestha (Nepal), MAN Dhanushka, TSS Pieris, GC Anuruddha, and DCJ Karunarathna tied for the 4th to 8th places sharing 30,000/= while 9th and 10th places were shared by TGM Pieris, Luxman Wijesuriya, Isuru Alahakoon and Prasanna Kurukulasuriya.
Dinushki Premanath won the best girls award, a cash award of Rs. 8,000/- with a Trophy and the gold medal scoring 6 points. . Sachini Ranasinghe had to satisfied with the Silver on the tie breaker after tying with Dinushki with six points. Pramodhi Sathya won the Bronze medal with 5 points.
