The only International
Master in the event, Anwesh Upadhyaya from India grabbed the 2nd Buddhi
International Championships convincingly scoring with 8.5 points out of
9 games yesterday. He, the top seed in the event with an ELO of 2408 had
only a draw against Abhishek Das of India in through out the event. Anwesh
received Rs 60,000/- with the Beautiful Buddhi International Trophy and
the Gold Medal.
The 2nd Buddhi International tournament which was organized by the Buddhi School of Chess on behalf of the Chess Federation of Sri Lanka and FIDE was a great success with 220 odd players participating with 16 foreign players. The tournament was held from 7th to 11th October 2011at the Apsara Hotel, Nittambuwa on Swiss System Basis over 9 rounds with a prize fund around LKR 300,000/=. National Youth Council of Sri Lanka has supported the Buddhi School of Chess in making the event a success. Abhishek Das of India became 1st Runner up with 7.5 points to win the Silver Medal and LKR 40,000/= while TU Navin Kanna also from India won the Bronze medal with 7 points. GC Anuruddha (Sri Lanka Navy), MShamkar (India), C. Natrajan (India), Fide Master, D Sai Sirinivas (India), WATS Gunasinghe (Sri Lanka), D Chakrabarty (India), D Manodip(India), Vasanta Wettasinghe(Sri Lanka), MK Chandrasekhar (India), Shakthi Ediriweera (Sri Lanka Navy) and Pasan Vindual Liyanapathirana (Sri Lanka) scored 7 points each and tied with Navin Kanna in the 3rd spot and shares a total of LKR 57,000/= among them. Manisha Sachini Gunaratne from Sirimavo Bandaranayake Balika Vidyalaya bagged the Women's Championship of the Buddhi International for the 2nd consecutive year. She scored a total of 6.5 points to get the Gold medal, The trophy with LKR 10,000/-. Wimasha Premasiri (Furguson High School Ratnapura) was 2nd to earn the Silver Medal with LKR 6,000/= while Neunika Methmani (Anula Vidyalaya)won the 3rd place to get the Bronze medal with LKR 4,000/=. The Awarding Ceremony was held at the Apsara Hotel under the patronage of Mr. Rasita Delhapola, the International Coordinator to the Chairman of National Youth Council as Chief Guest while Mr. Luxman Wijesuriya, the Vice President, CFSL & President Zone 3.2, FIDE and Mrs. Suneetha Wijesuriya, A gold medalist at the 30th Chess Olympiad from Sri Lanka as the guest of Honour with Miss Buddhi Panagoda, the organizer of the event.. |
