Grand Award Ceremony for Russian Ambassador Challenge Trophy Team Chess Tournament – 2011

The Award Ceremony of the Russian Ambassador Challenge Trophy Team Chess Championship was held on Friday, 25th February, at the Russian Centre Auditorium, Colombo 07. His Excellency Vladimir P. Mikhaylov, Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Sri Lanka graced the ceremony as the Chief Guest. Rear Admiral R.C. Wijegunarathne, Director General Service of Sri Lanka Navy was the Guest of Honour. Captain Udaya Dampage, Chairman – Chess in Sri Lanka Navy, Mr. Ayrat Akhmetov, 1st Secretary of the Russian Embassy and the Director of the Russian Centre, Dr. Saman Weerasinghe, International Secretary of Russia – Sri Lanka Friendship Society and Advisor to the H.E. President in Sri Lanka, Mr. Luxman Wijesuriya, President of Zone 3.2 Fide, Secretary of Commonwealth Chess Association, Fide International Arbiter, Secretary of the Chess Federation Of Sri Lanka, Mr.Buddhapriya Ramanayake, Chief Executive Officer of Russian Centre, Mr. I.M.K.B. Ilangasinghe, Principal of Isipathana College, Mr. Leelaratne Piyasena, Deputy General Manager of Asian Alliance Insurance PLC, Mr. Halin Hettigoda, General Secretary of Sampath Bank Sports Club, Mr. Damith Dehipitiya, Sports Secretary of Sampath Bank Sports Club, Mr. Bandula Withanage,Web Master of www.lankachess.com, Mr. Shelton Wijesuriya, Deputy Arbiter of this tournament were graced the above Award Ceremony.
By welcoming the participants Mrs. Suneetha Wijesuriya, President and the Chief Chess Instructress of the Anatoly Karpov Chess Club mentioned that with the blessings, guidance and support of His Excellency Vladimir P. Mikhaylov, Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Sri Lanka and Mr. Ayrat Akhmetov, 1st Secretary of the Russian Embassy and the Director of the Russian Centre, the Anatoly Karpov Chess Club conducted the Russian Ambassador Challenge Trophy Team Chess Tournament very successfully. Mrs. Wijesuriya thanked Mr. Luxman Wijesuriya, Chief Arbiter of this tournament and Mr. Buddhapriya Ramanayake and all those who helped the AKCC Club to complete the event satisfactory.
His Excellency Vladimir P. Mikhaylov, Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Sri Lanka mentioned that the Russian Embassy and the Russian Centre will give the maximum support to Mrs. Suneetha Wijesuriya, President of the Anatoly Karpov Chess Club to create chess Grand Masters to Sri Lanka. We will invite Former World Champion & Grand Master Mr. Anatoly Karpov to Sri Lanka in the near future and then Anatoly Karpov Chess Club can arrange advanced programs for Sri Lankan players to upgrade the knowledge to be Sri Lankan future masters, His Excellency added.
