The third installment of the Kandy
Open Chess Championship, organized by the 64 Squares International Chess
Academy will be held at the National Institute of Cooperative Development,
Polgolla from the 29th of August of 02nd September 2012. This tournament
consisting of 09 rounds, is one of the biggest International Rating
events in the country and the only one of its kind to be held in the
Hill Capital.
Past Kandy Opens have been graced by
over 20 competitors from India, Maldives and Nepal in addition to the
cream de la crème of Sri Lankan Chess. C. Natarajan from Chennai,
India emerged as the Champion of the Inaugural Kandy Open in 2010 while
Sri Lanka National Team Player, Dulan Edirisinghe, himself a proud son
of Kandy won the event last year, ahead of the higher seeded Natarajan.
This year will be no exception.
The Organizers of the Kandy Open Chess
Championship, 64 Squares International Chess Academy plans to make the
event even bigger and colourful than the previous years. In addition
to a Prize Fund in excess of Rs 250 000.00 including a first prize of
Rs 50 000, the organizers have added a fast passed lightning chess tournament
and Chess puzzle competitions to make it a true celebration of chess.
After streaming live videos of the tournament
in 2011 to the 64 Sqaures website, the organizers have launched www.kandyopen.com
