Kaveesha and Sachini win the Junior Nationals

Kaveesha Amarasena of Royal Colombo and Sachini Ranasinghe of Musaeus College won the Junior National and Junior National Girls chess Championships respectively yesterday. Kaveesha scored a total of 5 ½ points to share with four more players, but emerged the Champion according to the tie breaker used. Sachini also scored 5 ½ and tied with Irindu Basnayake from Girls High School, but won the Championship in better tie breaker.

The Junior National Chess Championship, conducted by the Chess Federation of Sri Lanka was held from 17th to 20th April 2009 at Royal College Colombo. A total of 66 players participated in the Junior Nationals while there were 23 players in the Girls event. The tournaments were held according to the Swiss System over 7 rounds.

YDB Madugalle(Dharmaraja college), Oshadi Kottahachchy(Royal College, Colombo), WCC Perera(Trinity College) and  TSS Pieris(Pannipitiya Dharmapala college) tied with Kaveesha scoring 5 ½ points each out of possible 7 and placed 2nd to 5th respectively. MAN Danushka(Isipathana College), Lahiru Munasinghe(Ananda College) and LMTI Lansakara(Mahanama College) scored 5 points each and placed 6th to 8th respectively. HLM Hapuarachchi(Kingswood College) and Rasheen De Silva(Richmond College) placed 9th and 10th with 4 ½ points each.

 

Irindu Basnayake won the Silver medal on tie breaker and Dinushki Premanath also from Girls High School was third with 5 points. Sakuni Cooray (Devi Balika Vidyalaya) and Jeevanthi Ratnayake(Girls High School) also scored 5 points each and had to satisfy with 4th and fifth places. Lakshika Wanasinghe(Mahamaya College) and RMMU Muhandiram(Maliyadeva Girls School) scored 4 ½ points to place 6th and 7th while Navodya Selvaratnam(Girls High School) and Kavindi Senarath(Musaeus College) was 8th and 9th with 4 points. The 10th was Chamindra De Silva (Holy Cross College, Kaluthara).
