TDR Pieris won the Sri Lanka Senior Chess Nationals again!

TDR Pieris won the Sri Lanka Senior Chess Nationals scoring six points out of 7 games convincingly. Pieris who was unbeaten in the tournament drew only two games with Ajantha De Silva and AH Katugampola and won all other five games with AJ Samuel, Josheph Jayasinghe, Sarath Rupasinghe,, Jagath Samarasooriya and ANG Piyadasa. TDR Piris, who was a Sri Lanka National Chess Champion in 1981, 1983,1995 and 2005 was a leading veteran Chess player who played a lot of International Events. He played in three Chess Olympiads in Switzerland 1982, Greece 1984 & Dubai 1986. He is winning the National Senior Chess Championship continuously from the beginning of the event.
The Sri Lanka Senior National Chess Championship was conducted by the Chess Federation of Sri Lanka from 29th August to 1st September 2020 at SATHARA Auditorium, Maharagama for the players over 50 years.. The Event, which is internationally rated was conducted Swiss System in 7 rounds with a Rs. 40,000/- cash prizes, trophies and Medals. Top three games were lively webcasted in all rounds.
Ajantha De Silva performed well to win the 2nd place with 5 1/2 points. Ajantha played strong and drew with TDR in the 3rd round but unfortunately lost to AH Katugampola in the 6th round to finish 2nd. He beat NAG Abeywardena, ANG Piyadasa, V Murali, Sarath Rupasinghe and Jagath Samarasooriya in other five rounds.
AH Katugampola was third with five points. He also drew with TDR Pieris in the final round, but had another draw with Jagath Perera in the fifth round and lost toJagath Samarasooriya in the 2nd round..He beat Bandula Gamaarachchi, NAG Abeywardena, V Murali and Ajantha De Silva,
Sarath Rupasinghe won the Senior over 65 Years category with five points convincingly. He only lost to TDR Pieris and Ajantha De Silva and beat S Karthigesu, Jagath Perera, Jagath Samarasooriya, Joseph Jayasinghe and NAG Abeywardena.
