44th FIDE World Chess Olympiad 2022 - Round 7 |
The Chess Olympiad 2022 which takes
place from the 29th of July to the 10th of August in Chennai, India, is
the 44th Chess Olympiad, aligned by FIDE. Olympiad matches consist of
two categories, the Open section and the Women’s section. Every
team consists of four players plus one reserve player. Olympiad will be
held in the format of a total of 11 rounds, in which the pairings will
be done under the Swiss system of Olympiad pairing system. |
The 8th round of both the Women’s
and the Open categories was held on 6th of August, 2022 at approximately
3.00PM. A total of 186 teams participated in this section. In the 8th
round of the Open section Sri Lanka went against Cote d’Ivoire(CIV).Sri
Lanka scored a total of 3.5 in the match where FM Isuru Alahakoon, FM
Ranindu Liyanage and IM L.M.S.T.Silva, all won against their respective
opponents, whereas Nabil Nazar obtained a draw with is opponent, Mark
Armold. After round 8 Sri Lanka was placed rank 80th while Armenia, India
2, Uzbekistan and Netherlands took on the leading positions of this section.
Sri Lanka’s Open team is going to play against Iraq in the 9th round
which will commence on 7th of August at 3.00 PM. |
In the Women’s section, a
participation of a total of 159 teams could be seen. In the 8th round
the Sri Lankan team was paired to play head-to-head against Nigeria. The
Sri Lankan team scored a total of 2.5 score with both WIM S.D. Ranasinghe
and Desandhi Gamage wining against their respective opponents and H.M.H.J.
Abesinghe obtaining a draw with her opponent. Unfortunately, WCM G.P.Y.Wijesuriya
lost her match against her opponent which resulted in Nigeria scoring
a total of 1.5 in the round. After this round the Sri Lankan women’s
team was placed 97th with India, Georgia and Ukraine obtaining the first
top three slots. In the 9th round Sri Lanka will go against Latvia which
has obtained rank 50 after the 8th round. |
