44th Chess Olympiad 2022 – Day 5 |
Games of the 44th Chess Olympiad
2022 started on 29th July 2022 in Mahabalipuram Chennai. Olympiad consists
of two categories. They are the Open and Women's categories. Olympiad
will be held in the format of 11 rounds under the Swiss system of Olympiad
pairing system. |
The fifth round of both women's
and the open category was held on the 02nd of August 2022. It started
at 03.00 pm. 186 teams were paired for the fifth round of the open section.
In the fifth round, Sri Lanka played against Tunisia in the 48th match.
Sri Lanka won the 3 matches against Tunisia and won the round. FM Isuru
Alahakoon, FM Ranindu Dilshan Liyanage & IM L M S T De silva won their
respective games and K G T S D Kiriella lost his game against IM Mohamed
Ali Boudriga. The young India 2 Team showed their strength and won every
possible round. Although they were ranked 11 in starting rank list, after
round 5, they were in the top seed. Armenia and Uzbekistan were in second
and third in the rankings respectively. Sri Lankan open team is going
to play against Scotland in the sixth round which is scheduled on the
03rd of August at 3.00 pm. |
In the women’s section, 159
teams were paired for the fifth round. Sri Lanka played against the Ecuador
team in the 39th match. Sadly, Sri Lanka lost the three matches played
against Ecuador. Only one match was tied up. WIM SD Ranasinghe went to
a draw with his opponent, WIM Anahi Ortiz Verdezoto. Romanian team which
ranked 20 in starting rank list, ranked 3rd after 5 rounds. They have
beaten the strongest Germany & Poland teams on the ladder. India &
Georgia ranked first & second after round 5. Sri Lankan women's team
is going to play against Chinese Taipei in the sixth round which is scheduled
on the 03rd of August at 3.00 pm. |
