Games of the 44th Chess Olympiad
2022 were started today (29th July 2022) at Mahabalipuram, Chennai. Olympiad
consists of two events. Open and women’s category. Olympiad will
be held in the format of 11 round teams under the Swiss system of Olympiad
pairing system. |
In the Open section, there are
188 teams registered and for the first round, 185 teams were paired. Three
teams will be joining during the next few rounds because they were unable
to come for the first round. The United States of America leads the starting
rank list of the open section, followed by India and Norway in the second
and third places respectively. All the top teams were able to win the
first round comprehensively. In the first round, Sri Lanka paired with
the strongest Hungary team which ranked 19 in starting rank list while
Sri Lanka ranked 112. Although Sri Lanka lost the round (2-1 to Hungary),
FM Ranindu Dilshan Liyanage and IM L M S T De Silva were able to draw
against the strongest two GMs in which the ELO rating difference of both
players with opponents is higher than 300. This was a good start for the
Sri Lankan open team. Sri Lankan open team will compete with the Bahamas
in the second round which will start at 03.00 pm on 30th July 2022. |
In the Women section, there are
162 teams registered and for the first round, 158 teams were paired. Since
four teams were not able to come for the first round, they will be joining
the next rounds. India leads the starting rank list of the women's section,
followed by Ukraine and Georgia in the second and third places respectively.
In the women's category also, top teams easily won the first round. In
the first round, Sri Lanka paired with the strongest Serbia team which
ranked 18 in starting rank list while Sri Lanka ranked 97 on the list.
Unfortunately, Sri Lanka lost the round (4-0) and will come back strong
in the coming rounds. Sri Lankan women's team will compete with Togo in
the second round which will start at 03.00 pm on 30th July 2022. |
