As an initiative to promote the strategic game of chess within the Sri Lanka Navy, a workshop was held by Mrs. Suneetha Wijesuriya, Chairperson of Lanka Chess Foundation and President of the Anatoly Karpov Chess Club for the sailors of Sri Lanka Navy, at Western Naval Command Headquarters on 03rd July 2009.

This was organized by Commander Udaya Dampage, the chairman of Chess with the blessing of Commodore Dec Jayakody at Western Naval Command Headquarters. Mr. Bandula Withanage, Chief Editor of www.lankachess.com has given his fullest corporation and assisted to conduct the camp.

A cross section of sailors from all the bases of Western Naval Command were actively took part during the presentation. The effectiveness of the workshop was well evident with the comments and the inspiring feedback of the participants. The Chairman-Chess stated during his vote of thanks, that the implementation process of promoting the game of Chess was well planned for next five years and the well established action plan is already in progress.
