The Annual Prize Giving of the Russian School of Chess ( Anatoly Karpov Chess Club ) was held today ( 17th February 2010 ) at the Russian Centre Auditorium. His Excellency Vladimir P. Mikhaylov, the Russian Ambassador graced the occasion as their Chief Guest and Mr. Ayrat Akhmatov, Director of the Russian Centre was the Guest of Honour.
Mrs. Suneetha Wijesuriya, President and the Chief Instructress of the Anatoly Karpov Chess Club mentioned that she was really happy about the chess promotional work that she was able to do under the blessings of the Directors and the Russian Ambassadors for the last 12 years. Mrs. Wijesuriya said that she is ready to do more promotional activities. She also said this is the correct time to invite the Former World Champion Grand Master Anatoly Karpov.
His Excellency Russian Ambassador impressed about the talents of young chess players and mentioned that their support will continue towards the activities of the Anatoly Karpov Chess Club. His Excellency said that he was really happy and proud to see more activities the Anatoly Karpov Chess Club has done for the last 12 years under the Chairmanship of Mrs. Suneetha Wijesuriya, ten times Sri Lankan Women’s Chess Champion and the Chess Olympiad Gold Medalist.
There were about 150 chess winners received the trophies and certificates. The Russian Ambassador His Excellency Vladimir Mikhaylov, Mr. Ayrat Akhmatov, Director of the Russian Centre, Mr. Buddhapriya Ramanayake, Chief Executive Officer of the Russian Centre and Mrs. Suneetha Wijesuriya, Preident of the Anatoly Karpov Chess Club were distributed the prizes to the winners.
