Anatoly Karpov Chess Club known
as one of the leading chess club in Sri Lanka celebrated the 11th Anniversary
at the Russian Centre Auditorium yesterday. Mr. Ayrat Akhmetov, 1st
Secretary of the Russian Embassy & the Director of the Russian Centre
in Colombo graced the ceremony as the Chief Guest. Mr. Ramal Jasinghe,
President of the Mercantile Chess Association and the Chief Executive
Officer of the Asian Alliance Insurance PLC and the Major General Siri
Ranaweera, Director of the Defence Services College and Mr. Buddhapriya
Ramanayake, Chief Executive Officer of the Russian Centre also attended
the function as their Guests of Honour.
By welcoming all, Mrs. Suneetha
Wijesuriya, President and the Chief Instructress of the Anatoly Karpov
Chess Club mentioned that she is really happy about the activities of
the club done within the last 11 years period. Further more she said
her dream is to create one or more Grand Masters to the country.
By addressing the gathering,
Mr. Ramal Jasinghe, President of the Mercantile Association appreciated
about the effort of this chess club has taken under the chairmanship
of Mrs. Suneetha Wijesuriya and promised to continue their support in
the future events.
There was a computer display
program has been arranged by the club to prove their previous activities
to the large gathering.
Mr. Ayrat Akhmetov, Director
of the Russian Centre mentioned that he is very proud to see the activities
of the Anatoly Karpov Chess Club done for the last 11 years and agreed
to give his fullest cooperation to create Grand Masters in Sri Lanka.
Their was a lightning chess tournament
among the four champions of under 11 (Girls & Boys) and Pevinya
Peiris of Anatoly Karpov Chess Club won the Trophy by winning all the
games.
At this function, the Anatoly
Karpov Chess Club has arranged to distribute Medals and Certificates
to the winners of the Age Group Chess Tournament conducted by the club
to commemorate the 11th Anniversary.
