Sri Lanka National Rapid Chess Championships 2022
Pasan Vindula Liyanapathirana of Anandians Chess Club and M Esandi Newansa of Dharmasoka College were crowned as the Sri Lanka National Rapid champion and Woman National Champion. Sri Lanka National Rapid Chess Championships 2022 was organized by the Chess Federation of Sri Lanka and held on September 17th & 18th at Sharasthrananda Nawodya Maha Vidyalaya, Dehiwala. The tournament was played under the standard control of 15 min plus 10-sec increment from move 01. A cash fund of Rs 70,000.00 is offered to the winners with trophies, medals and certificates.
In the open event, 305 players competed for nine rounds. Pasan Vindula Liyanapathirana was unbeaten throughout the event and only one game was drawn and it was against Pesandu Rashmitha Liyanage in the eighth round. Two players were tied for the 2nd and 3rd places respectively. Pasindu Nimsara Dhramakeerthi and FM Isuru Alahakoon scored 8 points respectively and with the better tie break Pasindu Nimsara Dhramakeerthi (Richmond College) became the first runner-up and FM Isuru Alahakoon (Sri Lanka Navy Chess Club) had to satisfy with 3rd place.
In the women's event, 127 players competed for seven rounds. M Esandi Newansa was unbeaten throughout the event and only one game was drawn and it was against Presansa Premanath in the fourth round. Five players were tied for the 2nd and 3rd places respectively. WCM K M Dahamdi Sanudula, Devindya Oshini Gunawardhana, WFM Dasuni Mendis, WCM Ehsha Mishela Pallie & Dehansa Nisanduni Sandanayake scored 6 points respectively and with a better tie-break, WCM K M Dahamdi Sanudula (Musaeus College) and Devindya Oshini Gunawardhana (Wycherly International School) secured the first runner up and second runner up places respectively.
