Pesandu Liyanage wins 9th Sri Lanka Chess Grand Prix 2022!
Pesandu Rashmitha Liyanage of DS Senanayake College won the Championship of the 9th Sri Lanka Grand Prix 2022 convincingly. In the Finals he beat S Sivathanujan of Kokavil Hindu College 1 ½ - ½ to secure the Championship. In the double round finals, Pesandu won his 1st game with white pieces and got a draw to finish the event in the 2nd game where he earn Rs. 60,000/=, the Gold Medal and the Championship Trophy. Earlier in the Semi Finals, he beat Osheen de Silva and came to the finals.
S Sivathanujan had to satisfy with the Silver Medal. He received Rs. 40,000/= in cash as well.
In the Consolation Finals. Osheen De Silva of Sri Lanka Navy beat Vinuda Shenal Gunatilake of Royal College 1 ½ - ½ . Osheen beat Vinuda in the first Round and got a draw in the 2nd round to finish with 1 ½ winning Rs. 25,000/= with the Bronze Medal.
Vinuda had to satisfy with the 4th place and a cash award of Rs. 15,000/=. Buddhika Amarasinghe(SJP Chess Club) beat Kosala Sandeepa Amaratunge(Boswell College International) and elected the 5th place and claim Rs. 10,000/= cash award.
The 9th Sri Lanka Chess Grand Prix 2022, conducted by the Chess Federation of Sri Lanka had two stages, in the first stage, two round Robin events were played with 9 rounds with 9 players. Unfortunately, Surath Wijeratne withdrew from the event after the 1st round and a forfeit point was given to all opponents in the each round.
In the 2nd stage a knocked out events of Semifinals and Finals were played among the top two teams of Group A and B. The two 3rd place players played each other for the 5th place. All knocked out games played giving two round with, white and Black per each player.
CFSL had offered the following Cash awards with the medals and certificates:
Champion - Rs. 60,000/=
Runner -up - Rs. 40,000/=
3rd - Rs. 25,000/=
4th - Rs. 15,000/=
5th - Rs. 10,000/=
