CRG Krishna wins the Sri Lanka Open International

CRG Krishna of India won the Sri Lanka open Chess Championship convincingly, when he beat Romesh Weerawardena in the 10th and Final round at the Public Library Auditorium, Colombo yesterday. He scored a total of 9 points jsut giving couple of draws in the earlier rounds. He bags a total sum of 100,000/- Sri Lankan Rupees and the trophy with the Gold medal. Arun Karthik also from India won the 2nd place when he beat RMCM Rajapakse in the 2nd table. He scored a total of 8 1/2 points and collected Rupees 50,000/- with the silver medal. The top seed and only International Master, Vishnu Prasanna has to satisfy with the 3rd place since he lost couple of Games to Sri Lankan, RS Kalugampitiya and the winner CRG Krishna in the earlier rounds. Vishnu beat GC Anuruddha in the final round to collect Rs. 25,000/- with the Bronze medal.
The Sri Lanka open International Rating Chess Championship was held from 2nd to 6th March 2011 at Public Library Auditorium, Colombo. A total of Rs. 400,000/- is offered as cash awards in this oldest Chess tournament in Sri Lanka.
Sachini Ranasinghe of Sri Lanka won the women's Champion award with 7 points in better tie breaker after Tying with Sri Lankan National Women's Chess Champion, WFM, Dinushki Premanath. Sachini lost to RS Kalugampitiya while Dinushki drew with Vasanta Wettasinghein the final round. They shared the 1st and 2nd prizes of women's Category, a total of Rs. 40,000/=. WFM Pramodya Senanayake won the 3rd Place in Women also tying with two other players, WFM, Supeshala Thilakawardena and Chamoindra de Silva.
RS Kalugampitiya, PKUM Jayasundara and WCC Perera shared the 4th to 6th award with 7 1/2 points while GC Anuruddha, RMCM rajapaksha, Romesh Weerawardena and RS Dissanayake tied for the 7th place. ILK Tennakoon, Osheen De Silva, Yasas Kalana Kuruwitage, Wiman Bhagya, PD Senanayake and S Lamahewa tied for the 11th place to share a total of Rs. 25,000/-. This was a good exposure for the young Sri Lankan Nationl Chess teams who are willing to face much strongedr opponents in the Asin Zonal of the zone 3.2 in home soil.
