Paul Morphy Chess Club wins the Inter Club Super League

The Paul Morphy Chess Club won the Inter Club Super League Chess Championship after a close battle with Fisher Chess Club yesterday. The Inter Club Super League Chess Championship conducted by the Chess Federation of Sri Lanka was held from 4th to 7th February 2010 at Royal College, Colombo with a participation of top 8 Chess Clubs in Sri Lanka.

Paul Morphy Chess Club consisted of Dulan Edirisinghe, Romesh Weerawardena, PMAB Athukorala, PMRL Bandara, PMDI Bandara, RK Athavan and Naditha Amarakoon scored a total of 27 points out of possible 42 points. They beat Nf3 Chess Club 3 1/2 - 2 1/2 in the last round to achieve this title. They beat passed pawn Chess Club 3 1/2 - 2 1/2, Reborn Chess Club 4 1/2 - 1 1/2, Kandy Chess Commun 5-1, Super Knights Chess Club 3 1/2 - 2 1/2and Royal College Chess Club 4-2 and drew with Fisher Chess Club in the earlier rounds to reach the final tally.

Fisher Chess Club with RS Kalugampitiya, HML Hapuarachchi, Udith Jayasundara, Isuru Alahakoon, Yasasa Kalana Kuruwitage, Akhila Kavinda and Sanka Samaraweera placed 2nd 25 1/2 points while Nf3 Chess Club with SR Gunasinghe, Shamine De Moraes, Asela Prabhajith, NCO Saranga, Surath Premaranjan, Viman Bhagya and DCJ Karunaratne 3rd scored 22.5 points to place third. Passed Pawn Chess Club, Super Knights Chess Club and Royal College Chess Club scored 20 points each to get the 4th to 6th place respectively. The performance of Super Knights Chess Club consisted of bunch of young promising Chess players was commendable. Kandy Chess Commune was 7th with 19.5 points while reborn Chess Club was 8th with 13.5 points.

The 7th and 8th teams have to play in the B division finals next year allowing the top two teams in the Inter Club B this year to play in the next year Super League finals.
