The Sri Lanka Under 14 National Chess Team wins the Bronze medal at the Asian Nations Cup Blitz Chess Championship 2016

The Sri Lanka Under 14 National Chess Team won the Bronze medal at the Asian Nations Cup Blitz Chess Championship 2016 today at China. They won 6 matches drew with the winner Iran and lost couple of matches to earn 13 match points to win this most important Chess Championship. They collected 24 game points out of the possible 36. The team comprises of Harshana Thilakaratne (Captain, Maliyadeva College), Sasith Nipun Piyumantha(Dharmasoka college), Kulisa Saranatha Nanayakkara(Gateway - Negombo) and Ranindu Dilshan Liayanage (Ananda College) with Lasal Jayawardena (Lycium International School) as the reserve.
Iran won the Championship with 15 match points while China won the 2nd place with 14 match points. The 1st asian nation Cup for under 14 years is conducted by the Chinese association under the auspices of the Asian chess federation from 5th to 12th November 2016 in China. Sixteen teams from 12 asian Countries are participating in this prestigious event.
Harshana Thilakaratne scored 7 ½ points out of 9 games being unbeaten while Sasith Nipun piyumantha scored 5 ½ points. Kulisa Saranath Nanayakkara and Ranindu Dilshan De silva both scored 6 points out of 9 to get a team score of 24 points. This is the highest team medal won by a Sri Lanka chess players at any Chess event in Asia.
