44th FIDE World Chess Olympiad 2022 - Round 11

The Chess Olympiad 2022 which takes place from the 29th of July to the 10th of August in Chennai, India, is the 44th Chess Olympiad, aligned by FIDE. Olympiad matches consist of two categories, the Open section and the Women’s section. Every team consists of four players plus one reserve player. Olympiad will be held in the format of a total of 11 rounds, in which the pairings will be done under the Swiss system of Olympiad pairing system.
Today, 10th of August, 2022 marks the last ever round of the 44th Chess Olympiad 2022 giving a conclusion to the past two weeks filled with dedication of teams all around the globe who gathered to Chennai, India to go head-to-head against each other to win the title “the strongest chess nation of the world” and many more.
The 11th round of both the Women’s and the Open categories was held on 10th of August, 2022 at approximately 3.00PM. A total of 188 teams participated in the Open section. In the 11th round of the Open section Sri Lanka went against Romania, in which unfortunately the Sri Lankan team had to face defeat due to Romania obtaining a score of 3 points while only leaving one point to the Sri Lankan team which was gained by the combination of the two draws made by Ranindu Liyanage and L.M.S.T De Silva. With that the Sri Lankan team acquired the rank number 68. After the 11th round today, which was also the last ever round of the 44th Chess Olympiad 2022, the teams that obtained the top three leading spots making them the winners of the open section were Uzbekistan, Armenia and India 2 respectively.
In the Women’s section, a participation of a total of 162 teams could be seen. In the 11th round the Sri Lankan team was paired with Norway. Unfortunately, the Sri Lankan team could only score a total of 1.5 points against their opponents, with H.M.H.J.Abesinghe winning against her opponent and Desandhi Gamage obtaining a draw and the other team members all witnessing a defeat against their respective opponents. The Sri Lankan team was announced to be placed rank number 83.The medal winners of this section were Ukraine Georgia and India with the United States placing 4th.
With the end of all the matches of the 44th Chess Olympiad today in Chennai, Sri Lanka impressed us with their quite amazing scores and dedication with the Sri Lankan team from the Open section obtaining the rank 68, even after being placed rank 112 in the beginning and obtaining a Category Prize in Group C as the 4th place and the Sri Lankan team from the Women’s section acquiring rank 83, also while obtaining a Category Prize in Group D as the 3rd place. And what makes this event more memorable for Sri Lankan is FM Ranindu Liyanage gaining his first-ever IM norm.
The 44th chess Olympiad that was held in India for the first time ever saw a record number of teams taking part in the open and women’s sections. Tamil Nadu Chief M.K.Stalin presided over the closing ceremony saying “efforts were on to make Tamil Nadu a global destination for sports” and extended greetings to the next host for the FIDE Chess Olympiad Budapest in Hungary.
